The first interface I posted way back in 2018 has been one of the most popular post on this site, however since then I have been using a slightly improved and cheaper interface based on the low-cost CP2102 UART chip commonly available on eBay, Amazon and well frankly almost anywhere!

CP2102 based USB UART

The circuit is very simple, consisting of a 1N4148 diode and a 10K resistor connected to the tip of a 3.5mm audio style jack and common ground to the sheild. The diode and resistor can fit inside a 3.5mm barrel jack or spliced inline if using a premolded cable. The UART modules are available in a few different shapes, sizes and colours so it is quite easy to make a solution to fit your preferences.
